Morning, team. 🕶️

Temporal just raised $550M at a $12.55B valuation selling infrastructure nobody wants to think about. The metric that did it: net retention above 200% since February. Customers more than double their spend without being asked. OpenAI, NVIDIA, and JPMorgan can't quit it.

In today's newsletter, we'll get into:

  • Vesting clauses that leave dead equity

  • Nvidia anchors Anthropic at $70B

  • Bending Spoons acquires Miro for €1.7B

  • State Department launches ten-minute passport renewals

RUSHIN' ROULETTE

Five bullets of updates

  1. 🤝 Italian app developer Bending Spoons is acquiring AI-powered innovation workspace Miro in a €1.7 billion deal. The move underscores rising consolidation in productivity and collaboration software and suggests that focused AI-first products can still command multi-billion euro exits from strategic buyers, not just IPOs or late-stage funds.

  2. 🏗️ Firmus, an Asia-Pacific data-center developer, is targeting a $5 billion ASX IPO at a $10.5 billion valuation. That deal would rank among the largest Australian floats, signals its valuation has doubled since April, and shows how AI infrastructure contracts like its OpenAI agreement are pulling more public-market capital into data center capacity.

  3. 🧠 AI email platform Superhuman is acquiring YC-backed AI meeting notetaker Fathom, which brings 400,000 monthly active users under its umbrella. The deal signals productivity suites will keep buying specialized AI tools, as platforms race to bundle email, meetings, and notes into agentic AI workflows that act as one assistant instead of scattered apps.

  4. 🛂 The U.S. State Department is launching an online passport-renewal system that lets eligible Americans complete the process in about 10 minutes from home. By turning a paper-heavy, in-person errand into 10-minute renewals, it signals how even slow-moving government services are being rebuilt around consumer-grade digital UX expectations.

  5. 🧨 Sam Altman, Elon Musk and Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei urge a slowdown in advanced AI development as Trump administration officials reject federal curbs on the industry. The split signals that near-term US rules may stay light-touch, leaving AI startups to navigate self-imposed safety standards while federal policy stays focused on technological competition with China.

If a bigger platform absorbed you tomorrow, relieved or robbed?

Fathom hit 400,000 monthly users and still ended up inside someone else's inbox. Being loved isn't the same as being standalone.

Temporal raises $550M to make your flaky AI actually work

Temporal just did something most founders only fantasize about: it raised money nobody asked to see the deck for.

The number that makes VCs sit up

A $550M Series E at a $12.55B valuation, co-led by Lightspeed, with a16z, Sequoia, Tiger, and T. Rowe piling back in. In a market where most infra rounds get haggled to death, this one basically priced itself.

Here's why. Temporal sells "Durable Execution," which is a fancy way of saying your app remembers what it was doing when everything caught fire, then finishes the job. Boring? Sure. Until you're running a long AI agent that dies halfway and torches your data.

And the numbers are the actual pitch, not the founder. Revenue run rate up over 200% year over year. Net dollar retention above 200% since February, meaning existing customers more than double their spend without leaving. That's the metric that unlocks premium multiples: stickiness you can't fake.

In August alone, the platform processed billable actions totaling 1.9 trillion, up 350%. Paying customers hit 4,300+, including OpenAI, NVIDIA, and JPMorgan Chase.

The lesson for you

Temporal didn't win on charisma. It won on retention above 200% and usage nobody could rip out. Last year the team doubled to 570. Build the thing enterprises can't quit, and the valuation stops being an argument.

BIG TECH NEWS

NVIDIA eyes Anthropic IPO, bets on its own best customer

Nvidia just did the one thing everyone swore would never happen: it started blurring the line between the chip and the model.

Two decades of "modular AI stack" gospel taught us the layers stay separate. Silicon here, models there, APIs in between. Everyone keeps their lane. Now, the chipmaker is reportedly in talks to anchor Anthropic's IPO, a debut that could value Anthropic north of $70 billion.

Look at the speed. Founded 2021. A $2B Google check by late 2023. A $4B Amazon infusion in 2024. Now the world's biggest chipmaker underwriting the public offering. That is not a company growing. That is a company getting absorbed into the infrastructure that feeds it.

Meanwhile, on the platform layer: hyperscalers who played neutral just got a problem. Stay Switzerland, or become a compute utility. There is no comfortable middle anymore.

The quieter casualty: your seed-stage infra startup. The message from this alignment is blunt. Pick a side, or build a moat nobody can cross.

So what do you actually do?

Stop building for generic cloud. Optimize hard for specific GPU architectures. Live inside CUDA and Triton, not around them.

Own your data, not the model. Fine-tune on domain data so deep your output survives whichever provider wins the war upstairs.

Watch Nvidia's next earnings call. The analyst questions on AI-model investments will be the first honest read on whether this vertical-integration era flies. Pick your lane before the market picks it for you.
