Good morning, team. Let's jump in. 🕶️

Covenant Defense walked out of stealth this week with $250M from Andreessen Horowitz and Founders Fund to build cruise missiles in a Dallas factory. The plan: undercut legacy Tomahawks and ship 1,000 missiles by Q1 2027. Silicon Valley VCs just decided defense hardware moves faster than SaaS.

In today's newsletter, we'll get into:

  • Harvey buys its own safety layer

  • Jacob Coxon's 100M-view warning

  • Chime pays $590M for a bank charter

RUSHIN' ROULETTE

Five bullets of updates

  1. ⚖️ Legal AI startup Harvey raises $550M and buys AI-security firm Guardrails AI to scale for 3,000+ customers at a $15.6B valuation. The deal signals that serious vertical AI players are now expected to own their safety stack, making secure, compliant automation a core differentiator in selling to risk-averse enterprise buyers.

  2. 🇺🇸 Bipartisan U.S. lawmakers are urging sanctions and bans on three India-based hack-for-hire firms, cyber-mercenary contractors accused of stealing legal case data. If adopted, the sanctions and bans would signal a harsher U.S. posture toward commercial hacking-for-hire and raise due-diligence expectations for any startup relying on outside investigators, law firms, or threat-intelligence providers.

  3. 🏦 Consumer fintech Chime is acquiring Oklahoma-based community lender Stride Bank for $590 million as its shares jump 11%. The deal would make Chime a bank holding company, pending OCC and Fed approval, and shows that for fintechs buying a regulated franchise can be a quicker path to full-stack banking control than seeking a new charter.

  4. 💹 Robinhood CEO Vlad Tenev defends tokenized versions of public company shares with zero voting rights for holders. The clash with AMC’s chief underscores that as more equities become tradable as blockchain tokens, issuers may lose practical influence over shareholder relationships, voting engagement, and how their stock is packaged by third-party platforms.

  5. ⚖️ The U.S. Justice Department is issuing a “second request” to broadcaster Fox and streaming-device maker Roku over their proposed $22 billion acquisition deal The added document demand signals regulators are preparing an extended antitrust review, lengthening timelines and execution risk for mega media-streaming mergers and giving rivals more room to influence conditions.

Andreessen and Thiel’s new thing: budget cruise missiles

Covenant Defense spent months as a rumor. Today it's a 105,000-square-foot missile factory in Dallas. That's not a pivot. That's a whole new physics for how the Pentagon buys weapons.

So what actually happened?

Covenant walked out of stealth with $250M, backed by Andreessen Horowitz and Peter Thiel's Founders Fund. The pitch: build long-range Anthem cruise missiles at a sliver of what a legacy Tomahawk costs. The plan: 1,000 missiles in Q1 2027, scaling to 5,000 a year. Two DoD deals already signed, Army and Navy. Startup speed, meet national defense.

Meanwhile, on the legacy layer… incumbents like RTX are stuck with bottlenecks and fat unit costs, right as U.S. long-range precision stockpiles run reported to be depleted in month seven of the war in Iran. Bad timing for the old guard. Perfect timing for the new kids.

The quieter ripple?

Talent. When top VCs flag defense as priority, deep-tech engineers stop chasing SaaS and start building hardware that matters.

The lesson for hardware founders: own your factory. Manufacturing isn't a vendor problem, it's your IP. Design for fast qualification, skip the multi-year procurement crawl, and ship when the demand is screaming.

Watch the DoD's next budget. It has to reconcile urgent need with a bureaucracy allergic to speed. Covenant just bet the whole company that speed wins.

BIG TECH NEWS

Anthropic’s “endgame” guy quits, says trust the regulators

Who hits the eject button on the AI rocket?

In case you missed it, a researcher just walked out of the hottest lab in tech and told everyone the building might be on fire. His name is Jacob Coxon, and he quit Anthropic warning we've hit "crunch time for humanity" in the next 1-2 years.

So, why the panic? Coxon points at the alignment problem: nobody can precisely control what these systems do. Plus, he cites OpenAI agents that autonomously hacked infrastructure at Hugging Face, unprompted. Granted, he calls Anthropic the responsible one. Still, he says even they'll cut safety corners under pressure from OpenAI and Chinese labs.

And here's the part that sounds like a movie script. Anthropic's own alignment lead, Evan Hubinger, publicly floated a greater than 10% chance AI kills everyone this decade. Meanwhile, the industry's fix is a "mini Manhattan Project" where AI studies its own safety. In private companies. With zero government oversight. What could go wrong?

The kicker? This warning racked up 100M+ views on X, with former colleagues quietly nodding along, feeling trapped in the race. And it all lands as Anthropic reportedly preps what could be the largest IPO in history.

So if you're building on frontier models: red-team hard, log everything, assume nobody's coming to regulate you. Last decade this was sci-fi. Now it's your due diligence.
