Morning, legends.

One company keeps raising at higher multiples without changing the product. A handful of founders are learning to protect IP while using the same tools everyone else has access to.

Somewhere in between, there's a question sitting on a lot of desks: what's actually worth more right now, the thing you built, or the data you're already sitting on? The math behind that answer shifted this week, and if you're building on someone else's infrastructure, it might've just repriced your ceiling.

Databricks hits $188B, still hasn’t finished this funding round

Databricks just crossed $188 billion in implied valuation. Seven months ago, it was worth $62 billion. The product didn't triple. What tripled is how the market prices enterprise data access in an AI cycle.

The strategy makes the logic explicit: rebrand from big data SaaS into an AI platform, ship products like Lakebase and Omnigent, then lean hard into open-weight models. CEO Ali Ghodsi's internal benchmarks show open models matched proprietary ones from Anthropic and OpenAI on difficult coding tasks at significantly lower cost. The margin isn't in the model. It's in the harness around it — context management and prompt orchestration drove cost differences more than raw capability ever did.

Investors are now paying growth multiples for data gravity, not model innovation. If your infrastructure already touches enterprise workflows, packaging AI on top of that access is where the valuation premium lives. If you're selling a model wrapper without proprietary data underneath, this round just repriced your ceiling downward.

Why Most Startups Fail to Get Investors

FOUNDER BRIEF

What founders clicked on most in recent issues

🗣️ OpenAI unveils $6.5B Jony Ive-designed AI speaker, triggering Apple lawsuit and a 10% Sonos stock drop over IP fears.

The legal risk centers on allegations that OpenAI’s hardware team used confidential Apple codenames, unreleased component specs, and even physical parts brought to interviews to tune the device’s enclosure, acoustics, and materials stack. Discovery on that playbook will decide whether the entire five-product roadmap from io ships on schedule or stalls behind an injunction.

🧑‍💻 Figma replaces résumé-first hiring with obsession-driven screening after reporting 45% faster product cycles.

Instead of optimizing for polished CVs or LeetCode performance, hiring managers now screen for candidates who’ve already shipped ambitious side projects, run niche communities, or logged hundreds of unpaid hours tinkering with relevant tools—signals of sustained, intrinsic obsession that reliably predicts follow-through under vague specs and shifting roadmaps.

🤖 Meta pulls new AI Instagram feature 3 days after launch following global privacy backlash and pressure from CAA.

Internally, the reversal began after CAA and other talent reps warned clients’ faces could be remixed into AI-generated ads, sexualized content, or political memes without consent, exposing Meta to rights-of-publicity claims. EU regulators had also started probing whether the opt-out design violated upcoming AI and privacy rules.

🔎 Global brands see up to 30% organic traffic drop as AI-led GEO eclipses traditional SEO tactics and click focus.

Instead of chasing blue links, GEO work now centers on publishing ungated, expert-led content with original data and clear authorship signals that LLMs can parse, verify and repeatedly cite. Brands leaning into this are trading raw visit volume for higher-intent sessions that convert more efficiently down-funnel.
