Good morning, legends.
When the founder who built and then publicly buried a $600M unicorn launches round two by selling the autopsy as the advantage, something's shifting.
The playbook isn't iterating. It's inverting. Elsewhere, drive-thru bots are out-earning human cashiers while premium brands bet the opposite direction, and one-person companies are quietly crossing $1M ARR with nothing but automation and nerve.
The line between reckless and resilient is being redrawn in real time, and the founders watching closely are the ones building different this time.

Sonder’s Francis Davidson tries a startup with no chaos

Francis Davidson is back. After scaling Sonder to a $600 million rocket ship that later cratered, he’s now building Odessia explicitly around one idea: most startup deaths are designed in from day one.
Instead of a victory lap, Odessia starts as a live postmortem. Strategy and culture are being rebuilt with failure as the primary design constraint, not an after-the-fact explanation. That means treating growth, capital intensity, and operational complexity as risk dials, not vanity metrics.
The interesting shift isn’t “new company after collapse.” It’s a founder using a large-scale failure as product requirements for the next org: constrain ambition with hard operating disciplines, institutionalize pre-mortems, and make downside risk legible at the board level. If this works, engineering around failure becomes a competitive advantage, not a concession.

How to Value your Startup (and keep your Equity)
You have a startup idea.
It has billion-dollar potential.
But how much is it actually worth right now?
In this episode, Caya breaks down how early-stage startup valuations really work; and why most founders think about them the wrong way. We explain pre-money vs post-money, how dilution actually happens (bricks vs pie charts), why most pre-seed rounds translate to 15–20% equity, and how raising more money can paradoxically make your company “worth” more.

BIG TECH NEWS
Taco Bell’s new closer: a relentlessly polite upsell robot

Photo by Terry Jaskiw on Unsplash
Apparently the most dependable worker in fast food doesn’t need bathroom breaks. AI voice agents are quietly taking over drive-thrus, turning the headset into legacy hardware while bots politely process orders and push extra toppings.
Penetration is still low: roughly 6 percent of US drive-thrus, but chains like Taco Bell, Dairy Queen, and White Castle are scaling hard after an ugly v1 full of viral failures. The new generation trades “wow” moments for incremental gains: a few dozen seconds off service time, higher order accuracy, and aggressive but consistent upselling.
The real play is data. Persistent voice profiles plus POS history turns a menu board into a recommendation engine, with AI deciding who gets which nudge, in which language, at which time of day.
For AI and infra startups, this is the template: narrow domain, massive volume, human fallback, and clear unit economics. Whoever owns the stack that lets chains swap humans for scripted agents without killing hospitality wins.
