Happy Friday, team. 🕶️
Photon staged an actual funeral for mobile apps, casket and all—then raised $4.5M to replace them with AI agents that live in your texts. The pitch worked: 40,000 developers signed up.
The thing actually driving growth? The free open-source version, at 98% of usage.

RUSHIN' ROULETTE
Five bullets of updates
🛰️ Satlyt, an orbital AI-computing startup, has raised $8M to build open-source software that runs AI directly on satellites. By positioning itself as the “Android of orbital computing” across multiple manufacturers, it’s challenging vertically integrated, iPhone-style satellite stacks with a shared developer platform layer in space.
🧠 Google is phasing the rollout of its newest AI model instead of a single global release, citing internal safety concerns. The cautious launch lands as an FTC investigation into AI startups Anthropic and OpenAI signals that both product decisions and go-to-market speed for foundation models will increasingly be constrained by regulatory risk.
🛡️ Kyiv-based AI startup Osavul raises €8.5M Series A to expand its hybrid threat intelligence platform against state-backed cyber threats. The funding, which brings total backing to €12M, shows security and defense agencies, along with commercial enterprises, are investing in AI tools that can identify and attribute state-backed cyber threats across multiple industries.
🗳️ Greg Brockman, president of AI lab OpenAI, withdraws a pledged $25 million donation to an AI-focused super PAC. The reversal, driven by internal criticism from employees seeking stricter AI oversight, shows how employee pressure can quickly reshape corporate political strategy around regulation-heavy technologies.
💡 Private investors pour over $6 billion into fission and fusion nuclear startups even as listed nuclear companies trade down. The split between record startup funding and bearish public valuations signals strong appetite for early-stage nuclear risk but tougher later-stage exits and pricier growth capital.
🧠 OpenAI and chip-design software giant Synopsys are launching GPT-Synopsys, an AI model for automating complex semiconductor design workflows. By embedding frontier AI into EDA tools, the partnership signals a coming wave of AI copilots in hardware engineering, where speed, power and area tradeoffs increasingly depend on algorithmic assistance rather than just headcount or brute-force compute.
Should staff decide where a founder's own money goes?

Photon buries the app, raises $4.5M anyway
The startup that threw a funeral for your phone
So picture this: a startup literally stages a funeral for mobile apps, casket and all, then goes out and raises $4.5M to bury them for real. That's Photon, and the eulogy is going well.
Here's the pitch: stop making people download your app. Let an AI agent meet them where they already live, inside iMessage, WhatsApp, SMS, email, even voice. No install, no onboarding funnel, no app store tax. Just a thread.
Is anyone actually buying this?
Turns out, yeah. Over 40,000 developer sign-ups, 10x revenue growth in four months, churn under 3%, and 5x messaging volume in the last month alone. Co-led by Gradient and A*, with Vercel and HongShan joining the seed round.
The founders fit the archetype perfectly: Daniel Tian, UPenn dropout, and Ryan Zhu, a high school dropout who wandered into the MIT Media Lab. They started with a scrappy open-source iMessage bot that racked up thousands of GitHub installs. Two years later, here we are.
The catch nobody mentions: that open-source version still drives 98% of usage. So the thing printing the growth charts is mostly the free one. Classic.
The real lesson for founders: the interface is moving off the screen and into the conversation. If your product is still a tap-and-scroll app, you're designing for a graveyard. Build intent-driven, ship to owned channels, get SOC 2 and HIPAA compliant day one like Photon did. The app isn't dead yet. But the funeral's booked.

BIG TECH NEWS
Cloudflare teaches your AI agents how to swipe a credit card
Cloudflare just quietly flipped the switch on the internet's next business model. Not for humans. For machines.
What is the Monetization Gateway?
It's a closed beta that lets domain owners charge AI agents for access to APIs, MCP tools, and datasets. Under the hood sits the x402 protocol, which crams payment authorization straight into the HTTP request. The resource unlocks only after the agent pays, settled in USDC on the Base blockchain. No credit card rails. Just machine-to-machine cash.
For founders building B2B SaaS and API platforms, this is the part you cannot ignore.
Meanwhile, on the pricing layer… Cloudflare's own AI Gateway already charges for inference per request, and the new gateway stretches that to whole domains. Pricing runs from $0.001 to $100, fixed or variable. Launch customer API2PDF went variable, because PDF jobs chew unpredictable compute. Smart.
Who controls the agent's wallet?
That's the uncomfortable question. Agents now need budget tracking, retry logic, and tool selection based on price per call. Cloudflare's answer is Virtual Wallets for spending allowances, still unreleased.
So here's your move: stop designing subscription tiers for humans. Assume the buyer is an autonomous agent with a budget and a wallet. Build granular usage metering and micro-transaction pricing now.
The free-roaming agent era is closing. The metered one just opened.
