The government just entered the product release cycle, and it's not asking nicely. Frontier models are now distributed by whitelist, satellites are bundled into vertical stacks, and the funding lines between Washington and Beijing are hardening into doctrine.

What looked like temporary friction is turning into permanent architecture. If your roadmap assumes open access, unrestricted APIs, or a neutral playing field, this Tuesday is a decent time to revise.

Rocket Lab buys Iridium, rents a spine against SpaceX

Rocket Lab just bought Iridium for roughly $8B enterprise value, $54 per share in cash and stock. Deutsche Bank and Wells Fargo are backstopping a $3.6B bridge loan to fund the cash side, with closing expected by mid-2027. Iridium brings $871.7M in 2025 revenue at a 57% OEBITDA margin, a global L-band network, and 500+ distribution partners.

This is the SpaceX playbook: own rockets, own the network, own the customer; except Rocket Lab isn't chasing consumer broadband. It's stitching together L-band critical communications: safety-of-life, government, maritime, aviation, IoT, and direct-to-device services aimed at enterprises and defense buyers. One acquisition turned a launch-and-manufacturing vendor into a vertically integrated constellation operator with recurring revenue and harmonized spectrum.

The squeeze for founders: if your product depends on satellite connectivity, the landscape just consolidated. Rocket Lab plus Iridium can bundle launch, payload, and service distribution; or bypass you entirely. Defensibility now lives in domain-specific workflows and regulatory certifications, not transport.

Why VCs Are Rejecting Your AI Pitch

BIG TECH NEWS

Anthropic gets a hall pass, still on the no‑fly list

The U.S. government is now your AI distribution bottleneck, and the first case study just played out in real time.

After a two-week standoff and a DoD "supply-chain risk" blacklisting, the administration approved Anthropic's Mythos 5 release to roughly 100 companies and federal agencies. Fable 5 stayed locked down entirely. Anthropic has sued to reverse the designation.

The selective unlock is the precedent that matters. Frontier model access is now granted by government whitelist, not product roadmap. Rivals are already adapting:

OpenAI previewed GPT-5.6 Sol, Terra, and Luna directly to government entities, limiting initial rollout to pre-vetted "trusted partners." Rather than wait for its own forced suspension, it's building the compliant distribution channel first.

The founder implication is structural. Export-control directives and nationality-based access restrictions aren't edge cases anymore. They're go-to-market constraints. If you're building on top of frontier models, geo-fenced API access, compliance audit trails, and proactive federal engagement need to be baked into the stack from day one, not bolted on after a crisis.
